The 1914 $10 “Hemp” Bill was first issued on November 16, 1914. The two scenes show a vignette of farming in Manchester Township, York County, Pennsylvania showing farmers harvesting hemp.  The industry vignette scene is a processing mill.  Pennsylvania continued to produce hemp through the 1900s until outlawed by the Federal Government. The bill was printed on actual hemp paper. Interestingly enough, the Secretary of Treasury, “Andrew Mellon” (whose signature appears on the front of the bill at the bottom right), his nephew was Harry Anslinger, head of the Bureau of Federal Narcotics in 1931 and directly reasonable for marijuana and hemp prohibition in the United States. How times have changed.
